Obsidian
Obsidian is a strikingly gorgeous Ayam Cemani rooster, a rare breed known for its unique all-black appearance. From his glossy feathers to his skin -- everything about Obsidian is jet black, making him quite eye-catching. In the sunlight, his feathers shimmer with an iridescent beetle-green hue, adding to his mystique.
Obsidian came to live here in June 2022, but his journey to FPAS began when his previous family, living within city limits, found themselves unable to keep him due to a no-rooster ordinance. Neighbors had already reported him, and for months, he had been living in a crate inside their home as they searched for a safe solution. Hatched in an incubator by them, he was at least lucky to have a family who cared enough to ensure he found a sanctuary where he could live his best life. Most roosters aren't so fortunate.
The Ayam Cemani breed, originally from Indonesia, is steeped in history and mysticism. Prized in their homeland, these chickens are believed to have magical powers and the ability to communicate with the spirit world, serving as good luck charms. The breed name itself reflects their striking appearance: "Ayam" means chicken in Indonesian, while "Cemani" is thought to mean entirely black. Though their beauty has made them increasingly popular, particularly in the U.S., it's important to remember that animals shouldn’t be valued solely for their looks.
For Skye, rescuing such a unique and mystical breed was truly a dream come true. Yet, Obsidian represents more than just rare beauty—he’s a testament to the urgent need for safe homes for roosters, regardless of how unique or rare they may be.
