Frequently Asked Questions

What Types of Internships are Available?
There are three types of internships. Animal Care, Marketing and Live-In which is an all inclusive sanctuary experience. For Animal Care Interns and Live-In Interns, the primary learning experience will be the hands-on care of the animal residents under the guidance of FPAS Founder and Director, Autumn Skye Franklin, in addition to assisting in the facilities, administration, and outreach departments.

Where is the internship?
Both the animal care internship and live-in internship take place entirely onsite at Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary (FL-GA Line) in Cairo, GA. Just 25 min from Tallahassee, Bainbridge, and Cairo, 10 min from Havana, FL, and 45 min from Thomasville, GA. The marketing internship is a more remote experience with weekly sanctuary visits.

How long is the internship?
Live-in Internships are 8 weeks long. Traditional internships are 16 weeks long. If interested applicants cannot commit to that time period, they can learn about other volunteering opportunities here.

Is Previous Experience Required?
No previous experience is required to be a Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary Intern, but a love and respect for animals and nature is a must.
Are FPAS Internships Paid?
No. Internships at Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary are not paid. Currently FPAS has no paid staff.

Do I have to be vegan?
Out of respect for our residents, we ask that interns do not bring animal products onto sanctuary property and we encourage a vegan lifestyle during the internship period.
Is Housing Available for Interns?
Live-in internships are available on a case-by-case basis. Live-in internship agreements differ slightly from our traditional internships and are a more full time, immersive experience. Our live-in interns have the opportunity to learn through a wide variety of hands-on experiences. One day you might be caring for animals, the next gardening, assisting with a building project, maintaining enclosures, painting, or even supporting our outreach through social media, research, or fundraising.

Is there phone service/internet?
The farm is in a very rural area. Cell phone coverage can be spotty. However, high speed internet is available in the main house, the volunteer/feed barn and throughout the majority of the sanctuary.
How are FPAS Internships Different from Volunteering?
Internship opportunities offer a higher level of involvement at Flying Pig Animal Sanctuary. Interns will gain a deeper understanding of administrative operations, animal care, and life at a non-profit animal sanctuary. As such, internships are required to have a higher level of commitment.
