Lady Lyra Moonflower

The Giant Puppy Sitter

Lady "Lyra" Moonflower, lovingly called "Lye Pie" by her family, is a 150lb Merle Saint Dane (Great Dane-Saint Bernard cross) born in November 2020. She joined the Franklin/FPAS family in January 2021. Skye first saw Lyra as part of an accidental litter being given away to good homes, and she knew in her heart that one of the puppies was meant for them. Little did she know that just two weeks later, they would unexpectedly lose their beloved Great Dane, Ziggy Marley.

Lyra’s personality is as big as her size, and she couldn't be more different from their two previous Danes, Marmaduke and Ziggy. She’s a clumsy, slobbery, stubborn bulldozer who absolutely hates water and sheds so much that it seems like she should have been bald long ago. She despises the vulture family that has taken up part-time residence at the sanctuary, and she’ll let everyone know when they’re around. Though not much of a snuggler, Lyra gives the best hugs. She doesn’t realize how big she is and will smother you with her love, but despite her size, she also plays incredibly gently with Wilder. Watching them together is truly magical. Lyra is Wilder’s big sister and best friend. Their bond is one of the most precious things to witness, as they play, snuggle, and love each other deeply. She’s not just great with Wilder—she's been a wonderful playmate to all the puppies who have come to the sanctuary, earning her the title of "Puppy Sitter."

Her presence has changed the dynamics (and cleanliness) of the household in a big way, and while she’s made Skye question her life choices on more than one occasion, she’s a much-loved member of the family.
