Penelope

We adopted Penelope late in 2014 from the Bainbridge Humane Society, where she was moved to after being found by animal control wandering around town. We had been looking to rescue a second pig so baby Ollie (already neutered)  would have a friend, so we were very happy to get to bring her home. She was young, fairly small, with a sweet and friendly disposition, and she and Ollie immediately became best friends!

Not long after she arrived, I went out on the back porch one morning to find that she had torn up a bunch of stuff and made a big pile. At the time, we were very new to caring for pigs and had no clue what she was doing. Turns out, she was pregnant and building a nest for her babies! On Christmas Eve 2014, she gave birth to six beautiful healthy piglets: five boys and one girl. We name them Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, and Cupid--after Santa’s reindeer. We kept the firstborn Dasher, who still has a wonderful bond with Penelope, and adopted out the rest to forever homes.

Penelope is not the top pig on the farm, but she definitely is not lowest on the totem pole either. Though she can be bossy, she is also very respectful and sweet to humans and her boy Dasher.
